The Happiness Trap

Keys to spiritual enlightenment

Is your happiness like a yo-yo?  One minute up, and the next, down?

Then you have plugged into the wrong form of happiness!

For me, happiness is an internal space that is cultivated so that it is independent of what is happening in the external world. Happiness is part of the transcendent experience of being alive. It flows into joy, bliss, and from there in compassion, love, healing, listening and ecstasy. This flow loops around to happiness again and into other qualities of feeling emotion.

How does happiness relate to  the keys to Spiritual Enlightenment?

I experience happiness as a component of spiritual enlightenment, one of many components.

The group,  “Greater Good Science Center” is offering a free course on the Science of Happiness. It has begun already, but you can still join.

I have been participating in the group forums and have been shocked to discover how many people view happiness as related to the external, even people who are well versed in the topic. The problem with this view of happiness is that the external is constantly changing, and with it our experience of happiness. For instance happiness at work can be dependent on how others like us, or treat us or  fight with us, or boss us around.

If this is the case then obviously we are literally psychological slaves to the whims of other people. They get mad, we get sad. They are kind, we feel loved and happy and all is ok again. An impending meeting with the Boss can feel like waiting for an execution!

Like a yo-yo on a string our emotions go up and down based on the external.

How to get to Happiness as a form of Spiritual Enlightenment? Can it be a key to spiritual enlightenment?

As we focus on the happiness in the external  world we may pretty soon realize that chasing the external is a fools game.

However most people do not gain this realization. In order to gain the realization I recommend that you question your happiness:

  • Why are you happy?
  • Can you feel happy without that external?
  • What is the feeling of happiness in the body?
  • Does the happy feeling occur for your without any external stimulus?

As you question your experience of happiness you are likely to realize that:

  • Happiness occurs spontaneously. You wake up and realize you are happy.
  • Sometimes the object of your desire does not make you happy! You get your favorite coffee but still feel fed up with something, you know not what.
  • Sometimes objects that you did not think would make you happy do so.You see a kitten, you feel happy.

Spiritual Awakening will happen through this questioning and inquiry. Your questions will reveal that the feeling of happiness is independent of the external world. Once you have that realization you can begin to cultivate that space of  happiness, which in turn distances it from the external, so you are able to flow happily from situation to situation, from drama to drama, creating more happiness for you and for those around you.

As a Key to Spiritual Enlightenment this inquiry into the nature of happiness is a profound teacher and instructor. Please use it! Inquire!
