The Physical and Psychological Effects of Meditation
A Review of Contemporary Research
by Steven Donovan, Michael Murphy, and Eugene Taylor
When it was initially published,The Physical and Psychological Effects of Meditation drew wide attention within the meditation community and eventually sold all copies. Its authors, Michael Murphy and Steven Donovan, were leaders and instigators in the American growth center movement, very experienced meditators, and they presented their bibliography as an initiative of the Center for Exceptional Functioning, a brand new program within Esalen Institute.
Murphy and Donovan have given us a wonderful summary of meditation research that predicted and anticipated, among other trends, the very rapidly increasing influence of psychology in all fields of medicine, the increasingly important role of beliefs and values in healing techniques, the potential of an increasing dialogue developing between science and religion looking from the perspective of spiritual experiences, . They also laid out the potential for understanding that the new models of consciousness might have on our evolving study of character development This 2nd edition of the text suggests that these are still rising trends for the future.
